Study courses of the Professional Bachelor Study Programme ,,Technical Translation,,


With respect to the content, the Professional Bachelor Study Programme ,,Technical Translation,, includes:

  • General theoretical subjects in the chosen field in the corresponding foreign language (English or German), such as the basic course of practical grammar, basics of written discourse, development of listening comprehension of monologues, dialogues and professional texts, lexicology and stylistics, development of speech and listening comprehension skills, reading and interpretation of professional literature;
  • Professional subjects directly related to translation: translation of specialized and legal texts. The programme includes consecutive translation practice. To perform successful written and oral translation of the respective texts, the programme provides the course in business and law terminology (“key notions”). It enhances students’ notional and terminological skills and abilities in translating corresponding texts.
  • Study subjects related to the responsibilities of a secretary, desk-officer or a translation expert: development of communicative and technical skills such as functional communication, business communication, technical means of office work, computer science, and presentation skills;
  • As subjects of limited option students may choose:

a) study subjects in economics and management – decision-making, management economics, introduction to economics as well as small business management;

b) study subjects in engineering sciences – building typology, architectural composition and forms; volumes, spaces and individual building construction; telecommunications; transport and logistics; mechanics, electrical engineering, etc.

These subjects are essential for students to comprehend and translate corresponding texts and themes precisely.

The students may choose a course in Latvian as the official state language, a basic course in Russian, practical courses in a second foreign language: English, Spanish, German or French as well as the following kinds of translation practice: Latvian – Russian, Russian – English, Russian – German, general courses in a second foreign language – Spanish, French, Swedish, German and English;

Due to the adequate structural subdivision of subjects the implementation of the programme fully conforms to its aim to prepare technical translators – desk-officers with high professional qualification.
